A lot of drivers assume that once a dent gets past a certain size, Paintless Dent Repair is off the table and they're stuck paying for filler and paint. That's not always true. Size alone doesn't disqualify a dent from PDR — what actually matters is whether the paint stayed intact and whether the metal can still be accessed and worked from behind. We've corrected plenty of large dents — a shopping cart corral impact, a parking garage pillar, a runaway cart in a windstorm — without ever touching the factory finish.

Large dent PDR simply takes more time and, often, more access points than a small ding. Our technicians may need to work from multiple angles, gradually massaging a wider area of metal back into its original contour rather than pushing from a single spot. It's methodical work — rushing a large panel is how you end up with a wave or a low spot that catches the light wrong — so we build in the time it actually takes to get the shape right, not just close enough.

Where large dents most often fall outside PDR is when the impact was sharp enough to crack the clear coat, stretch the paint thin, or crease a body line badly enough that the metal has lost its memory of the original shape. In those cases, conventional bodywork is the right call, and we'll tell you that upfront rather than attempt a paintless fix that won't hold up. We've written a full breakdown of how to tell which approach your dent actually needs if you want to understand the difference before you come in.

We've corrected everything from a full-side sliding door impact to a hood that took a direct hit from a falling tree limb, and in a fair number of those cases, the vehicle's owner assumed it was a total repaint job before we even took a look. A large dent job usually takes longer to schedule and complete than a quick ding — sometimes a full day or more depending on the panel — but when it qualifies for PDR, you're still saving significantly on both time and cost compared to filler-and-paint bodywork.

The only way to know for sure whether your large dent qualifies is to have it looked at in person. Bring your vehicle by for a free assessment — we'll examine the paint, check the access points, and give you an honest recommendation either way.
